Summer is here – but not the crowds. Which is why June is one of the best times of year to visit Puglia on the southern tip of Italy. The weather in Puglia in June is hot and sunny. It’s also dry. This is the driest month of the year with rain on only three or four days and temperatures in the mid 20s. It’s perfect beach weather with the sea a now balmy 23°C.
The weather in Salento in June is perfect for a holiday combining beach and culture. And one of the best places to bag both is Gallipoli and the coast of beaches down to Ugento and through to Leuca. This picturesque coastal town has a wealth of historical sights, the old town dominated by the imposing Angevin castle. You can meander the maze of tiny streets in the historic quarter, visit the bustling fish market – before heading to the town beach to cool off. The daytime temperature in Salento in June hovers around 25°C.
At Castello di Ugento, a luxurious boutique hotel in a restored 17th-century castle nearby you can also soak up the region’s history. Castello di Ugento has been in the d’Amore family since 1643 and has recently been renovated and restored. It now also houses a museum and the grand first-floor apartments decorated with a mythological cycle of Baroque frescoes are open for tours.
In the kitchen of the restaurant Il Tempo Nuovo, zucchini flowers will be used for tarts and lightly fried as aperitivi.. a highlight of the summer regional cuisine.
