The weather in Puglia in February is pleasant. The sea is a temperate 14°C – warm enough for a bracing dip if you’re brave, bonkers or both. The long beaches blanketed with basting tourists during the summer, are now empty, beckoning you for brisk beach walks. Castello di Ugento, a luxury castle hotel and home to the Puglia Culinary Centre is just a few kilometres from the Ionian Sea and the 6km-long beach at Marina di Pescoluse. This glorious golden sweep of sand between Posto Vecchio and Torre Pali is backed by dunes and has been compared to the Maldives.
In Castello di Ugento’s restored walled kitchen garden, lots of winter greens are in season: broccoli rabe, brussel sprouts, onions, romaine lettuce, “verza” Savoy cabbage.
